STATEMENT TO

SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION No. 137

with committee amendments

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

DATED:  MAY 18, 2026

The Senate Law and Public Safety Committee reports favorably and with committee amendments Senate Joint Resolution No. 137.

As amended and reported by the committee, this resolution designates June 10 of each year as “Christina Grimmie Day” in New Jersey.

Christina Grimmie was a proud New Jersey native who grew up in Marlton, New Jersey and rose to national prominence as a talented singer and songwriter.  Christina first built a devoted following in the early days of YouTube by sharing her music online, eventually amassing hundreds of millions of views and a global fan base.

Christina’s accomplishments also included successfully releasing her first independent extended play, “Find Me,” which debuted at number two on iTunes; amassing almost 3.5 million YouTube subscribers; finishing top three on season six of NBC's “The Voice”; performing on multiple television shows including "The Ellen Show" and “Dancing with the Stars”; having multiple album and single releases in the top 10 on iTunes; and winning an American Music Award in 2011 for New Media: Best Female, among many others.

Tragically, Christina’s life was taken by a gunman following a concert in Orlando, Florida in June 2016.  In the wake of this tragedy, Christina’s family established the Christina Grimmie foundation to support individuals and families facing similar unexpected hardships and crises, specifically families who have lost a loved one to gun violence.

Christina’s artistry, voice, and connection with her audience continue to resonate with fans around the world and her music and performances remain widely celebrated and continue to inspire new generations.  June 2026 will mark the 10-year anniversary of Christina’s passing.

It is altogether fitting and proper to designate June 10 of each year as “Christina Grimmie Day” to recognize Christina’s lasting cultural impact, honor her legacy as a New Jersey artist, and promote awareness of efforts to support victims of unexpected tragedies.

COMMITTEE AMENDMENTS:

The committee amended the bill to designate June 10 of each year as “Christina Grimmie Day”; as introduced, the bill designated June 10, 2026 as “Christina Grimmie Day.”
